Summary
Before joining copper plumbing pipes, they should be
prepared in the following manner:
1 Using a pipe cutter or hacksaw
2 Removing any burr
3 Cleaning the pipe with wire wool
Tools
Pipe cutter/hacksaw, vice, file/pipe cutterÆs reamer,
wire wool.
Materials
Wire wool.
Step 1 - Using a pipe cutter or hacksaw
Any pipes need to be cut square and be free of any burr.
A pipe cutter will tend to produce a cleaner edge than a
hacksaw. Hold the pipe in a vice to be sure the cut is square.
Mark the pipe and cut in the desired position.
Step 2 - Removing any burr
Ensure the newly cut edge is smooth, using a file or a
pipe cutterÆs reamer on the inside of the pipe.
Step 3 - Cleaning the pipe with wire wool
The interior and exterior of copper pipes should be cleaned
thoroughly until the bright copper is showing through the dull
oxidation. Use wire wool rather than sand or glasspaper.
This will ensure the adhesion of the joints.
